1 — System architecture: what kind of plant do you actually need?
Packaged, distributed or central plant; direct expansion, pumped circulation or secondary glycol; single-stage, two-stage or cascade. Architecture follows the load profile, temperature bands and site constraints — it cannot be chosen from a catalogue.
2 — Calculate the refrigeration load before choosing equipment
Product pull-down, transmission through the envelope, door infiltration, people, lighting, fans, machinery and defrost all belong in the load before any machinery is specified. Quotations built on different load assumptions cannot be compared.
3 — Ammonia (NH₃ / R717)
Ammonia is the industrial reference refrigerant for large, continuous low-temperature loads: zero GWP, outside HFC quota risk and strong efficiency at scale. It requires a machine room, gas detection, EN 378 / IIAR zoning and certified technicians within reach of the site.
4 — CO₂ (R744) and cascade systems
CO₂ suits sites where an ammonia machine room, detection and certified operators are difficult to provide. Transcritical performance is ambient-sensitive: in hot climates, parallel compression, ejectors, adiabatic gas coolers or an NH₃/CO₂ cascade must be priced explicitly in the RFQ.
5 — Compressors
Compressor type — reciprocating, screw or centrifugal — follows duty, temperature lift and part-load profile. Most industrial plants run far from design duty for most of the year, so part-load control and VFDs matter more than nameplate efficiency.
6 — Pumps, pump stations and circulation
Pumped liquid overfeed, glycol secondary loops and condenser water circuits are where efficiency is quietly lost. Pump selection, control and redundancy belong in the plant design, not in a separate procurement later.
7 — Heat recovery, energy cost and efficiency
Electricity is usually the largest lifetime cost of an industrial refrigeration plant. Condensing temperature control, defrost strategy, door discipline and heat recovery are the levers — but savings depend on the specific plant and cannot be guaranteed before survey.
8 — Cost, comparison and structuring the RFQ
Once the load, technology and scope are defined, quotations become comparable. This is the point at which supplier conversations are productive — not before.
