For commercial and industrial refrigeration projects (cold rooms, cold stores, process cooling) — not household fridges, home freezers or appliance repair. Results are planning estimates, not engineering design or safety advice; a qualified refrigeration engineer must confirm sizing before purchase.
Cold storage warehouse build & operating cost
Short answer: enter your capacity, temperature, scope and region to get a planning range for build cost (CAPEX), yearly operating cost (energy + maintenance) and 10-year total. Typical turnkey ranges: chilled USD 300–850 per m³, frozen USD 400–1,150 per m³.
Planning estimate only, from the ColdMatch 2026 cost benchmarks. Excludes land, building shell, automation, backup power, duty, taxes, staff and financing. Real prices come from supplier quotes.
Buyer questions
- How much does it cost to build a cold storage warehouse?
- Turnkey cold storage (excluding land and the building structure) typically runs USD 300–850 per m³ for chilled and USD 400–1,150 per m³ for frozen, based on ColdMatch 2026 benchmarks. Region, size and scope move the figure; the calculator applies the regional table for your location.
- What does it cost to run a cold storage warehouse each year?
- The two main recurring costs are electricity and maintenance. Chilled stores use about 30–55 kWh per m³ per year and frozen stores about 55–95 kWh per m³ per year; maintenance is typically 2–4% of plant CAPEX per year. Staff, insurance and financing are not included.
- Why is the estimate shown as a range?
- Real prices depend on insulation thickness, refrigerant system, dock design, local labour and duty. The range reflects the spread seen in regional benchmarks; supplier quotes based on a full project brief replace it with firm figures.
- How are pallet positions converted to volume?
- The calculator uses a planning rule of about 4.5 m³ of gross room volume per pallet position, including aisles and clearance. If you already know your room volume, switch the capacity field to m³.
- What is not included in the estimate?
- Land, the building shell, automation or ASRS, backup power, duty, taxes, staff and financing are excluded. Use the result as a first budget, then submit a project brief to compare supplier proposals.
