How capacity and duty are derived
Capacity: pallets per day × dwell days gives working positions; peak season, growth headroom and a target working occupancy convert that into the positions to build. The storage system and clear height set pallets per m², which fixes floor area and footprint.
Throughput: inbound plus outbound movements drive door count, opening frequency, MHE and staffing — all of which feed the infiltration and internal loads rather than being ignored as they are in volume-only sizing rules.
Duty: the derived room is passed to the shared ColdMatch thermal model — the same engine behind the cooling-load calculator — covering transmission, product pull-down with latent and respiration heat, infiltration and internal gains over your compressor running hours.
Honest bands: the result is a planning band, not a guarantee. Use it to size the project and write a comparable RFQ; a qualified refrigeration engineer confirms the final duty and the rack designer confirms the final pallet count.

- How do I size a cold warehouse from throughput?
- Multiply pallets received per day by the average number of days each pallet stays in store to get the working pallet positions, add a peak and growth allowance, then divide by the pallet density of the storage system to get floor area at your clear height. The planner does this and then runs the resulting room through the same thermal model as the cooling-load calculator so capacity and refrigeration duty come from one set of assumptions.
- Does the planner use the same engine as the cooling-load calculator?
- Yes. Once the room geometry is derived from product and throughput, the planner calls the shared ColdMatch thermal model — transmission, product pull-down (sensible, latent and respiration), infiltration through doors and internal gains — spread over the compressor running hours with a documented uncertainty band.
- How many pallets fit per square metre of cold storage?
- As a planning range: roughly 1.1–1.4 pallets/m² with selective racking at 10–12 m clear height, 1.6–2.2 with drive-in or push-back, 2.0–2.8 with mobile racking, and about 0.7–1.0 for block stacking at low height. Final density depends on rack design, sprinkler layout, fire regulations and MHE selection.
- What throughput drives door and dock sizing?
- Door count follows pallet movements, not room size. A well-specified door with an air curtain or high-speed leaf handles roughly 120–150 pallet movements a day. The planner counts inbound plus outbound movements, suggests a door count and prices the resulting infiltration into the duty.
- Can I send this straight to suppliers?
- Yes — send the plan to the RFQ builder so every supplier prices the same pallet count, the same room and the same duty. Final capacity, rack design, fire compliance and refrigeration selection must be confirmed by the selected manufacturer and your engineer.
