How the room plan is built
Envelope: walls, roof and floor panel areas are derived from the dimensions, then a U-value is scaled from the panel thickness for the temperature class. Transmission load is U × area × ΔT with a 10% allowance for thermal bridging at joints, corners and door frames.
Doors: each opening exchanges warm air with the room. The planner converts openings per day into an average infiltration load and suggests a door count from pallet movements — the trigger for air curtains, high-speed doors or a dock airlock.
Product: daily intake, arrival temperature and the pull-down window produce the product load, usually the largest single item in food and blast applications.
Capacity: usable volume after aisles and clearances is converted into pallet positions so layout and duty are planned against the same room, not two different rooms.

- What does the cold room planner calculate?
- It converts room dimensions, target temperature, insulation panel thickness, door openings per day and daily product intake into a room plan: internal volume, envelope panel area, recommended insulation, pallet capacity, indicative cooling duty split by transmission, infiltration, product and internal loads, and a suggested number of doors.
- How is it different from the cooling-load calculator?
- The planner sizes the room itself — geometry, envelope, capacity and door strategy — and gives an indicative duty so you can sanity-check the layout. The cooling-load calculator is the detailed duty step, with optimistic, base and pessimistic scenarios. Plan the room first, then refine the duty.
- What insulation thickness does a cold room need?
- As a planning rule: about 80–100 mm PIR/PUR for chilled rooms near +2 °C, 120–150 mm around 0 to −5 °C, 150–180 mm for −18 °C frozen storage and 180–200 mm or more for blast freezing and −25 °C or colder. Hot ambients, thin floors and high door traffic push the thickness up.
- How many doors should a cold room have?
- Doors are driven by throughput, not by room size alone. As a planning figure, one well-specified door with an air curtain or high-speed leaf handles roughly 120–150 pallet movements a day; beyond that, add doors or a dock airlock. Every extra door adds infiltration load and cost.
- Can I use this output in a supplier RFQ?
- Yes — the plan is a starting brief. Send it to the RFQ builder so every supplier prices the same room, the same duty and the same exclusions. Final sizing, refrigerant selection and code compliance must be confirmed by the selected manufacturer and your engineer.
