How do I choose an industrial refrigeration system?
Selection follows the application, cooling capacity, required temperature, energy cost, refrigerant regulation in the market, refrigerant availability and the maintenance capability on site. Ammonia is efficient at scale but needs trained operators and safety zoning; CO₂ suits low-charge and urban sites; HFO fits smaller or retrofit duties. No refrigerant is universally best — the trade-off is CAPEX, OPEX, safety and compliance.
What affects industrial refrigeration energy consumption?
Compressor efficiency and part-load control, variable-speed drives, suction and condensing temperature, condenser performance and cleanliness, evaporator sizing, insulation quality, defrost strategy, door management, controls tuning and maintenance discipline. Floating head pressure and heat recovery are common improvement routes. Actual savings depend on the plant and cannot be guaranteed before survey.
Central plant or distributed systems?
Central plants give better efficiency, easier heat recovery and lower lifetime energy cost at larger capacities, at the price of higher CAPEX and a single point of failure that must be mitigated with N+1. Distributed packaged systems are cheaper to install, easier to phase and fail independently, but generally use more energy per kW at scale.
