How do I plan a commercial cold-storage facility?
Start from the product, not the building. Fix throughput per day, receiving and storage temperatures, how long stock dwells, and the pull-down you need. Those four numbers give storage volume, then refrigeration load, then plant architecture, then installed cost. Only after that does a layout, a supplier list or a quotation mean anything. A planning estimate is enough to open a tender; the selected engineering provider produces the design that gets built.
The usual failure is sizing a building first and discovering the refrigeration load afterwards. Volume is driven by tonnes per day multiplied by dwell days divided by realistic net product density, then divided again by a utilisation factor that covers aisles, evaporator clearance and picking faces.
Refrigeration load is a separate calculation: transmission through the envelope, product pull-down, infiltration through doors, people, lighting, fork trucks, fans and defrost, plus a safety margin. Load per cubic metre varies by more than a factor of five between a low-turnover chilled store and a blast tunnel, so a single rule of thumb across a mixed facility will be wrong somewhere.
Utilities decide feasibility as often as budget does: available electrical capacity, supply reliability, water for condensers, and whether the site can host the plant room and safety distances the refrigerant choice requires.

What information do suppliers need before they can quote?
Six items make quotations comparable: product and packaging, tonnes per day in and out, target temperature and humidity per zone, required pull-down time, site ambient design conditions, and available electrical supply. Add the site address, clear height and any regulatory regime. Without them, suppliers quote different scopes at different assumptions and the prices cannot be compared — which is the single most common reason cold-chain tenders stall.
A quotation is only comparable when every bidder prices the same duty at the same design conditions. Publish the ambient design temperature you want the plant rated at, not just 'summer', and state whether the price must include installation, electrical work, commissioning and training.
State exclusions explicitly. Civil works, drainage, standby generation, floor heating under freezers and the incoming electrical supply are the items most often silently omitted from the cheapest quotation.

Why does a cold store need backup power?
Because the stock is worth more than the generator. A frozen warehouse loses safe temperature within hours of a supply failure once doors are opened, and a pharmaceutical store can breach its validated range in minutes. Standby generation sized for the refrigeration plant, controls and alarms — with automatic transfer and a tested start sequence — is standard on any project where a single outage would spoil the load or void a compliance record.
Size the standby supply for the duty you must keep running, not the full connected load: plant, condenser fans, controls, monitoring and dock lighting usually suffice, while battery chargers and office loads can be shed.
On weak or unstable grids the generator stops being a backup and becomes part of the base design, which changes fuel budgeting, maintenance and the case for solar-hybrid operation. State grid reliability in the RFQ so bidders price the same assumption.

Why should cold-chain procurement start with the project rather than supplier search?
Because a refrigeration quotation is only meaningful against a defined duty. Until the stored product, temperature band, capacity, daily throughput, room configuration, ambient climate, power availability and scope split are fixed, each manufacturer fills the gaps with its own assumptions — and the resulting prices describe different projects. Defining the project first costs days; comparing incompatible proposals, or re-tendering after an under-sized plant is discovered, costs months.
Capacity and throughput are not the same variable. A store holding 5,000 pallets that receives 40 pallets a day and one that receives 400 pallets a day need different refrigeration capacity, different door and dock design and different defrost strategies, even at identical volume.
Ambient climate changes condensing conditions and therefore capacity, energy demand and equipment selection. A plant rated at a 32 °C design ambient behaves differently on a 45 °C site.
Room configuration matters too: one large freezer, three mixed-temperature rooms, or a chilled store plus a blast tunnel are three different projects even at the same total volume.

Do I need a chiller room or a freezer room, and what temperature should I specify?
The product decides, not the building. Chilled rooms typically operate in a positive band suited to fresh produce, dairy, chilled meat or pharmaceuticals, while frozen rooms operate well below zero for long-term frozen stock; blast or freezing rooms are a separate duty again because they must remove heat fast, not just hold it. Specify a set point, an allowed tolerance band and whether humidity is controlled — a room 'around freezing' is not a specification a manufacturer can quote.
Write the temperature requirement as three values: set point, permitted operating band, and the recovery expectation after a door cycle or a defrost. Many disputes after commissioning come from a room that holds the set point on average but drifts outside the band during loading.
Mixed-product facilities are usually cheaper and safer as separate zones than as one compromise room, because the coldest, most humidity-sensitive product otherwise sets the duty for the whole envelope.

What is transmission load in a cold room and how large is it?
Transmission load is the heat conducted through walls, roof and floor because the room is colder than its surroundings. It scales with envelope area, the temperature difference across it, and the insulation's thermal resistance — not with stored tonnage. It is a question of throughput and handling, not size alone. A cold room is a single insulated envelope served by one or two evaporators, loaded manually or by pallet truck, typically up to a few hundred cubic metres. A refrigerated warehouse is a building with racking, dock levellers, air-locked loading, several temperature zones and usually a central plant with redundancy. Cross the point where trucks dock and stock rotates daily, and warehouse thinking applies.
The operational difference shows in infiltration. A warehouse with frequent door openings and a dock needs door protection, air curtains or an air-locked dock, and its infiltration load can exceed transmission through the walls.

Blast freezing freezes packed or bulk product in batches on trolleys or racks; IQF freezes loose pieces individually in a continuous belt or spiral so they stay free-flowing. Choose blast for cartons, blocks, carcasses and mixed batch production. What temperature is needed for frozen food storage?
Most commercial frozen storage is specified at −18 °C or colder at the warmest point in the load, which is the internationally recognised reference for frozen food. Ice cream and some seafood are held colder, commonly −25 °C to −30 °C, and tuna for sashimi far colder again. Chilled produce sits between 0 °C and +4 °C depending on the commodity. Specify the product temperature you must hold, not the air temperature, and state the allowed excursion.
Air temperature and product temperature are not the same thing. A store running −20 °C air can still hold product warmer than −18 °C at the pallet centre after a warm intake, which is why pull-down capacity and intake temperature belong in the RFQ alongside the storage set point.
Colder set points cost energy roughly in proportion to the lift the plant must produce, so a blanket −25 °C across a mixed facility is an avoidable operating cost when only one zone needs it. Zone the building instead.

Insulation thickness follows the temperature difference between room and ambient, the panel core material and its thermal conductivity, the local climate, and the transmission load you are willing to run permanently. Colder rooms in hotter climates need thicker panels; freezer floors and roof surfaces usually need more attention than walls. Thickness is an economic decision as much as a technical one — thinner panels reduce capital cost and raise energy cost for the life of the store.
Compare panel offers on core material, declared thermal conductivity, joint and sealing detail, vapour-tightness and fire classification — not on millimetres alone. Two panels of the same thickness can have materially different heat gain and very different fire behaviour.

Redundancy should be sized against the cost of losing the product, not against a preference. Common approaches include multiple compressors instead of one, N+1 capacity so the room holds temperature with one unit down, split plant serving separate zones, dual power feeds or standby generation, and critical spare parts held on site. Pharmaceutical, high-value seafood and single-site processing operations typically justify more redundancy than a low-turnover ambient-adjacent chill room.
Quantify the exposure first: product value at risk per hour of downtime, how long the room holds temperature unaided, lead time for the critical component, and local service response time. Those four numbers make the redundancy discussion commercial rather than theoretical.

Solar can carry a large share of a cold store's daytime electricity, but it rarely powers one on its own. Refrigeration runs at night and during cloud cover, so a viable design is grid-tied or hybrid solar with the grid or a generator as the firm supply, sized against the daytime load profile rather than peak panel output. Off-grid solar-only cold rooms exist at small scale and need battery or thermal storage, which changes the economics substantially.
The useful question is not 'can solar run it' but 'what share of annual kWh can solar displace at what payback'. Facilities with daytime-heavy loads — packhouses, pre-cooling, daytime picking operations — displace far more than a static frozen store that draws a flat load around the clock.

No. ColdMatch is not a bank, lender or broker of credit. What it does is financing preparation: helping a buyer assemble the project documentation lenders normally ask for — scope, comparable quotations, installed CAPEX, operating cost, offtake and sponsor information — and, where relevant, introducing the project to independent third-party financing partners. Eligibility, terms, approval and any decision to lend rest entirely with those institutions.
A well-prepared file is what makes a cold-chain project reviewable at all: lenders decline far more projects for missing documentation and unclear scope than for weak economics.
Keep any indicative payback, NPV or debt-service figure clearly labelled as the buyer's own planning estimate, to be confirmed with an accountant and the financing institution.

When is ColdMatch not the right route?
When the need is domestic or urgent-service rather than a project. Who signs the equipment or EPC contract, and who is responsible for installation and performance?
The buyer signs directly with the selected independent supplier, manufacturer or EPC contractor. ColdMatch Group is not a party to that contract. Installation, commissioning, compliance with local codes, warranty and guaranteed performance are the contractual obligations of the provider that signs. ColdMatch's role ends with brief preparation, comparable RFQ circulation, structured comparison and procurement support — it does not deliver, install, operate or certify the system.
Practical consequence: performance guarantees (pull-down time, temperature stability, energy consumption, uptime) must be written into the supply or EPC contract itself, with test conditions, measurement method and remedies. A comparison sheet cannot substitute for contractual language.
Split-scope projects (panels, refrigeration plant, racking, controls, civils) need a single named party responsible for interfaces and overall temperature performance, otherwise responsibility gaps appear at commissioning.

How is ColdMatch different from a refrigeration equipment marketplace or supplier directory?
A marketplace or directory starts with the supplier list; ColdMatch starts with the project. A directory answers "who sells cold rooms?" — it does not tell you what duty, temperature, throughput or scope those suppliers should be quoting. ColdMatch first turns the requirement into defined project inputs and a structured RFQ, and only then approaches manufacturers, so the proposals that come back answer the same question and can be placed side by side.
Practical consequence: contacting ten suppliers with an undefined brief produces ten different scopes at ten different assumptions. Contacting five suppliers with a defined duty, ambient design condition, scope split and required proposal format produces comparable numbers.
