When to use a cold-chain sourcing platform — and when not to
A sourcing platform is one of six legitimate routes to a cold-storage project, and it is not the right one for every buyer. This page sets out where it helps, where another route is faster or cheaper, and how the six options differ on the things that actually determine project risk: who designs, who contracts, who services the plant and who carries the performance obligation.
ColdMatch Group is an independent B2B sourcing and project-coordination platform. It does not manufacture equipment, does not perform final engineering design, is not an EPC contractor and is not a bank or lender. The selected independent provider contracts and performs the project scope.
Useful when
- The project is commercial or industrial, with a sponsor, a site and a budget range.
- You need several comparable proposals rather than one price.
- Storage capacity or refrigeration load is not yet fully defined.
- The scope combines equipment, insulation, controls, electrical work and installation.
- Local and international providers both need to be compared.
- Both installed CAPEX and lifecycle cost matter to the decision.
- The facility has several temperature zones or a freezing process.
- Financing preparation may be needed before capital is committed.
- Your country has few specialist suppliers for this duty.
- You need a structured RFQ that bidders can answer on the same basis.
Not the right route when
- The requirement is a domestic or single display refrigerator.
- You need an emergency repair technician today.
- The project is below the commercial threshold this platform is built for.
- You expect ColdMatch itself to manufacture, design or install the plant.
- You need a guaranteed loan or a credit decision.
- There is no project sponsor, site or budget yet.
- The requirement is unrelated to refrigeration or the cold chain.
For a breakdown, call a local refrigeration service company — sourcing takes days and a failed plant does not have days. For a known replacement unit, buying direct from the manufacturer or their dealer is usually faster.
The six routes compared
Compared on responsibility, not on marketing. Read the row that matches how you want risk allocated.
| Route | Design responsibility | Supplier choice | Quote comparability | Who contracts | Local service | Technical review | Financing role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct manufacturer | Their own equipment selection | One brand | Not comparable on its own | Manufacturer or their dealer | Depends on local dealer presence | Vendor-side | Sometimes vendor leasing |
| Local contractor | Practical design, varies widely | What they can source | Low without a common brief | Contractor | Usually strongest | Contractor-side | Rarely |
| Public supplier directory | None | Broad, unfiltered | None — you brief each one yourself | Whoever you find | Unknown | None | None |
| Refrigeration consultant | Independent design authority | Advises, does not supply | High, if they run the tender | You contract suppliers separately | Not provided | Independent, paid | Advisory only |
| EPC / turnkey contractor | Full design responsibility | Their supply chain | One integrated price | Single responsible party | Contracted, often optional | In-house | Occasionally structured |
| Independent sourcing platform (ColdMatch) | No design authority — structures the brief | Multiple independent suppliers and EPCs | High — one RFQ, same basis | The selected provider, directly with you | Provided by the selected provider | Information review, not an audit | Documentation preparation and third-party introductions only |
These routes combine well. Many buyers use a consultant for the design brief and a sourcing platform to run the tender, or use a platform to shortlist EPC contractors and then contract one of them directly.
What each party is responsible for
- ColdMatch
- Structures the technical brief, prepares a comparable RFQ, circulates it to relevant independent suppliers, and helps you compare responses on the same basis. Reviews the information suppliers provide; does not audit factories and does not guarantee performance.
- The selected provider
- Final engineering, regulatory compliance, pricing, delivery, installation, commissioning, warranty and performance. They sign the contract with you directly.
- Financing institutions
- Independent third parties decide eligibility, terms and approval. ColdMatch helps prepare documentation and may make introductions; it is not a bank, lender or credit broker and promises no outcome.
- You, the buyer
- Site, utilities, permits, commercial decision and contract signature — supported by your own legal, technical and financial advisors.
