How many dock doors does a cold DC need?

About one door per 90 pallets handled per day for high-velocity distribution, and one per 250 pallets per day for long-hold storage, with a minimum of two.

Does higher racking always reduce cost per pallet?

Up to a point. Above roughly 12–14 m clear height, structural and MHE costs rise faster than the density gain unless the operation moves to shuttle or ASRS.

How much clear height should I plan?
Modern frozen distribution centres are built at 12–14 m clear internal height; regional stores commonly sit at 8–10 m. Building higher lowers cost per pallet position but increases the refrigeration, structure and MHE investment.
What floor area do docks, staging and anterooms take?
Budget 15–25% of gross footprint for docks, staging, anterooms, plant room and circulation. Under-sizing the dock and anteroom is the most common cause of temperature excursions and throughput bottlenecks.
