Cold warehouse capacity is set by racking type and clear height: block stacking yields roughly 0.55 pallets per m² per level, selective racking 0.95, drive-in 1.35, pallet shuttle 1.75, and ASRS up to 2.4. Usable levels equal (clear height − 1.5 m) divided by about 1.65 m per pallet level, and effective capacity should be planned at 85% of theoretical positions.
Multiply floor area by pallets per m² for the racking type, by usable levels ((clear height − 1.5 m) / 1.65 m), then by about 0.85 for practical utilisation.
About one door per 90 pallets handled per day for high-velocity distribution, and one per 250 pallets per day for long-hold storage, with a minimum of two.
Up to a point. Above roughly 12–14 m clear height, structural and MHE costs rise faster than the density gain unless the operation moves to shuttle or ASRS.
