When is ammonia refrigeration the right choice?
Ammonia (R717) is normally the most energy-efficient option for large industrial duties — cold storage, food processing, breweries, dairy and distribution — especially above roughly 300 kW. It requires machinery-room safety design, detection, trained operators and compliance with EN 378 or IIAR practice. Where charge limits, urban siting or maintenance skills are constraints, low-charge packaged NH₃ or CO₂ cascade may fit better.
How is an ammonia plant sized and priced?
Sizing follows duty per temperature level, ambient design conditions, product load and operating hours; price then follows compressor type and count, vessels, evaporative or air-cooled condensers, pipework runs, safety systems, controls, plantroom civils, installation and commissioning. Redundancy (N+1) and heat recovery are significant cost variables that should be defined before RFQ.

Cooling duty per suction level, room or process temperatures, ambient conditions, plantroom location and space, power supply, redundancy expectation, heat-recovery targets, applicable safety code and available maintenance capability on site.
