What equipment does a cold storage facility need?

Every cold store, from a single room to a distribution centre, is built from the same parts. Use this table to check that your request covers each one; backup power is sized with the backup generator calculator.

Complete project starter kits

Typical combinations for a whole project, with how the parts depend on each other. Add a kit and individual systems to the same shortlist; you set quantities and options before one request goes to the ColdMatch team.

Produce packhouse with chilled storage

Remove field heat quickly, then hold packed fruit and vegetables chilled until dispatch.

Growers, packers and exporters of fresh produce, including berries and cherries.

How the parts depend on each other
  • Pre-cooler capacity follows the harvest peak, and the cold store must accept that many cooled pallets per day.
  • Packaging needs vents for forced-air cooling to work; confirm carton type before sizing.
  • Refrigeration for pre-cooler and rooms can be one plant or separate units — state your preference or leave it open.

Frozen food: freezing plus frozen storage

Freeze meat, fish or bakery product quickly, then store it frozen.

Food processors and exporters freezing their own production.

How the parts depend on each other
  • A freezer room only holds frozen product — the blast or spiral freezer does the freezing.
  • Choose batch or continuous freezing from how product leaves your line; both are rarely needed together.
  • For larger loads a central ammonia or CO₂ plant may replace the packaged rack; site safety rules decide.

Long-term fruit storage (controlled atmosphere)

Gas-tight rooms that hold apples, pears and similar fruit for months.

Fruit growers, cooperatives and storage operators.

How the parts depend on each other
  • Gas-tightness depends on panels, joints and doors together; ask who tests it and how.
  • Low-oxygen rooms need safe-entry procedures and alarms before staff go inside.

Pharmaceutical cold room package

Cold room for medicines with redundancy, alarms and records your quality team can qualify.

Distributors, hospitals and manufacturers storing temperature-sensitive medicines.

How the parts depend on each other
  • Temperature mapping and qualification are your quality team's sign-off; agree who performs them before ordering.
  • Redundancy covers refrigeration and power; state how long stock must stay protected during a failure.

Fish landing site: ice, chilling and freezing

Ice for the catch, a chilled room, plate freezing for blocks and frozen storage.

Fishing ports, cooperatives and seafood processors.

How the parts depend on each other
  • Ice demand per day sets the ice plant and its storage bin; seasonal peaks matter.
  • Water quality for ice in food contact must be confirmed locally.

Cold-chain distribution hub

Refrigerated warehouse, docks and road transport for daily pallet flows.

3PL, retail and food-service distributors.

How the parts depend on each other
  • Pallet positions and daily in/out flows decide docks, racking and refrigeration together.
  • Racking must not block air coolers or sprinklers; layouts are agreed with the building design.

Common system comparisons

Or tick “Compare” on up to three systems above to build your own side-by-side view.

Size and budget before you request

Calculator results are planning estimates to make your request specific; prices come only from supplier responses.

Cold room, warehouse, blast/IQF freezing or ammonia plant: which project is yours?

These four get mixed up in searches and in RFQs, but each is scoped and sized differently. Name the project type first, then brief suppliers in the unit that fits it.

Whichever type it is, the refrigeration plant that serves it is compared on industrial refrigeration systems.

RFQ checklist: six things every quote request needs

  1. Temperature range. Storage or process setpoint and tolerance for each zone; for freezing, the product's entry temperature and target core temperature.
  2. Capacity. In the unit that fits the project type — m³, pallet positions, kg/h or t/day, or kW of refrigeration duty — plus daily intake and peak season.
  3. Refrigerant and compliance requirements. Preferred or excluded refrigerants, client or site rules (for example food-safety or medicines distribution requirements) and the codes your engineer wants the design checked against.
  4. Site. Country and location, outdoor design conditions, available power, existing building or new build, access and space for plant.
  5. Project stage. Concept, budget, design, tender, replacement or expansion; target dates; and whether funding is approved.
  6. Service scope. Supply only, supply and install, design-and-build or full EPC; and whether commissioning, training, maintenance and spares should be priced separately.

ColdMatch does not provide engineering design. Refrigerant choice, charge limits, machinery-room design, pressure-system examination and hazardous-area assessment are set for each site by a competent refrigeration engineer under the rules that apply there. Official UK starting points (checked 31 October 2026): GOV.UK — F gas in refrigeration, air conditioning and fire protection systems; HSE — COMAH technical measures: refrigeration; HSE — Pressure systems: a brief guide to safety (INDG261).

Planning answers

What is the difference between a cold room and a cold-storage warehouse?
A cold room is a single insulated enclosure, often inside an existing building, cooled by packaged units and sized in m³ or pallet positions. A cold-storage warehouse is a whole temperature-controlled building with several zones, loading docks, racking and usually a central refrigeration plant, sized by pallet positions and daily throughput.
Is blast freezing the same as frozen storage?
No. Blast and IQF freezers remove heat quickly to bring warm product down to frozen temperature. Frozen storage then holds product that is already frozen. Freezers are sized by kg/h or tonnes per day; stores by volume or pallet positions.
When is ammonia used in industrial refrigeration?
Ammonia (R717) is commonly used for large, continuous duties in cold-storage warehouses, food processing and freezing, where a machinery room, gas detection and trained operators can be provided. It is toxic, so safety requirements are significant and set per site. There is no universal size threshold; low-charge ammonia, ammonia/CO₂ cascade and CO₂ systems are alternatives to compare at your design conditions.
What should a refrigeration equipment RFQ include?
At minimum: temperature range, capacity in the right unit, refrigerant and compliance requirements, site conditions, project stage and the service scope you want priced. Bids are only comparable when every supplier prices the same brief.

Cold storage equipment: buyer questions

What equipment does a cold storage facility need?
Most cold stores combine an insulated envelope (cold room panels or a refrigerated building), refrigeration plant with evaporators, doors and dock seals, racking, temperature monitoring and, where the grid is weak, backup power. Freezing, ripening or pre-cooling equipment is added when the product needs it. The categories above explain each part and what to specify.
Does ColdMatch sell equipment or publish prices?
No. ColdMatch is a buyer-side procurement service: the catalog describes system types, not products for sale, and shows no supplier names or prices. You send one request; the ColdMatch team reviews it, contacts suitable suppliers on your behalf and presents organised responses.
What should I include in an equipment request?
Products and storage temperatures, capacity in pallets or tonnes, daily inbound volume and product entry temperature, site location and building status, available power, installation scope and timeline. The more of this you provide, the more comparable the responses.
Is there a minimum project size?
ColdMatch's managed sourcing is designed for projects of about USD 250,000 and above. Smaller requests are still recorded, and the free calculators and guides stay available to every buyer.
