Biopharma & GMP biostorage

GMP Cold Storage Facilities for Biopharma — Multi-Band Project Planning

Biopharma sites rarely need one temperature. They need +2/+8 °C, −20 °C, −80 °C and sometimes LN2 vapour phase on the same floorplate, each with its own redundancy, monitoring and qualification scope. This page sets out what to define before suppliers quote.

Why source with ColdMatch

Band strategy first

+2/+8 °C, −20 °C, −80 °C and LN2 planned together instead of added later.

N+1 on every critical band

Automatic changeover, standby generation, UPS on controls, probes and alarms.

Qualification in scope

URS, DQ, IQ, OQ, PQ, empty and loaded mapping, excursion and requalification procedures.

Monitoring specified, not assumed

Probe positions from mapping, logging interval, escalation path and record retention.

Flows and containment

Airlocks, material and personnel routes, sample-level chain of custody, access logging.

ULT sized honestly

Freezer farm versus walk-in room compared on validation, energy and expansion.

Ten-year cost, not CAPEX alone

Energy, service, calibration and requalification modelled across the band mix.

Supplier-neutral RFQ

The ColdMatch team reviews your brief, then contacts suitable suppliers and asks each to evidence comparable GMP references.

Buyer questions answered

How do you size a multi-band biostorage facility?

Start from inventory in litres or pallet positions per band and its growth profile, not from an area target. Then load each band from envelope transmission at the local summer design condition, product pull-down for daily intake, door and airlock infiltration, defrost input on frozen bands and internal gains, and apply the redundancy factor to installed plant. Bands with small volumes but high criticality are usually better served by qualified cabinets on a monitored ring.

What drives cost most in biopharma cold storage?

Redundancy level, qualification scope and monitoring architecture — in that order — followed by the frozen and ULT share of the band mix. Two bids for the same room can differ by a third simply because one priced N+1 with generator autonomy and full loaded mapping and the other priced a single plant with a factory test certificate. State both explicitly so bids are comparable.

What fails most often on handover?

Mapping that was run empty, probes placed for convenience, alarm escalation with no named out-of-hours recipient, defrost cycles that push a frozen band out of tolerance, and no documented ride-through time from the loaded thermal mass. All five are specification decisions taken before award, not commissioning problems.

Typical project scale
  • •Clinical trial / sample biostorage suite: 50–250 m² across two or three bands
  • •Commercial biologics store: 250–1,500 m² with dedicated ULT area
  • •Regional biopharma hub: 1,500 m²+ with chilled, frozen, ULT and LN2 zones

Exact system sizing depends on required temperature, ambient climate, product load and turnover rate, door openings, insulation specification, storage duration, redundancy level and operating hours. ColdMatch does not manufacture equipment — we help industrial buyers compare suitable suppliers and technologies against project-specific technical and commercial requirements.

Information suppliers need to quote
  • •Country, project location and site status (greenfield or existing building)
  • •Application and product stored or processed
  • •Required temperature range and any humidity requirement
  • •Storage capacity (m², m³ or pallet positions) and daily throughput
  • •Ambient/design climate conditions at site
  • •Available power supply and backup or redundancy requirement
  • •Preferred refrigerant, if already defined by policy or regulation
  • •Indicative budget range and target commissioning date
  • •Inventory per band in litres or pallet positions, plus growth profile
  • •Required redundancy level and power autonomy in hours per band
  • •Monitoring architecture, alarm escalation path and record retention period
  • •Qualification scope expected from the supplier (URS through PQ, loaded mapping)
