Usable litres or m³ to be held at peak, the material's temperature requirement and any excursion tolerance, ambient and plant-room conditions, available electrical capacity and backup arrangement, monitoring and data-retention expectations, mapping and qualification scope, and whether the site prefers distributed freezers or a walk-in room. Without the backup and validation scope, quotes will not be comparable.
Why is ULT more sensitive to ambient and plant room design than a chill room?
The temperature difference across the envelope and across the condensing side is far larger, so poor plant-room ventilation, high condensing temperatures or an undersized envelope penalise ULT plant much harder than a +2/+8 °C room. Fixing the plant-room condition is often cheaper than buying more compressor capacity.
How is failure handled?
Through defined layers: spare capacity or N+1 plant, backup injection to hold temperature while a unit is repaired, generator and UPS for grid loss, independent alarming with out-of-hours escalation, and a written transfer plan naming where material goes if a unit is lost. Auditors look for the plan as much as the hardware.
