How to read this
The standby machine in an N+1 configuration is typically a small fraction of the value written off in a single documented excursion — which is why regulators, insurers and quality teams expect it for validated pharmaceutical storage. Hold time is not protection: it is the window in which backup power must start and stabilise, so specify changeover behaviour and alarm escalation in the same RFQ.
Limitations
Unit counts and CAPEX here are indicative planning figures based on equal-sized compressors and exclude civil works, electrical infrastructure, controls, monitoring, validation and installation. Generator sizing uses a 1.35 allowance over refrigeration electrical input for starting and ancillaries; a real electrical study may give a different result. Hold time must be verified by mapping or a thermal study on the actual loaded room.

- What refrigeration redundancy does pharmaceutical cold storage need?
- N+1 is the practical baseline for validated +2/+8 °C and −20 °C storage: full design duty is maintained with one compressor out for failure or planned maintenance. 2N — two independent systems, ideally on separated power and controls — is normally reserved for high-value biologics, clinical supply and −70/−80 °C biobanks where a single excursion can write off the entire inventory.
- How long will a pharmaceutical cold room hold temperature without power?
- Hold time depends on stored thermal mass, envelope quality, room volume, ambient and the allowable excursion width. A well-insulated loaded +2/+8 °C room typically holds within band for tens of minutes to a few hours; an empty room or a −80 °C freezer loses band far faster. Treat any calculated hold time as the window to start backup power, not as protection in itself.
- How much backup power does a pharmaceutical cold store need?
- Size the generator or UPS on the refrigeration electrical input plus controls, monitoring, alarms and essential lighting, with margin for compressor starting. Autonomy is a policy decision: 8–12 hours covers most urban outages, while sites with unreliable grids or remote locations commonly specify 24–72 hours plus a fuel contract.
- Is redundancy worth the extra capital cost?
- Compare the incremental CAPEX against the value of the stored inventory multiplied by a realistic probability of loss over the asset life, plus the regulatory and supply consequences of a documented excursion. For pharmaceutical inventories the extra machine is usually a fraction of one avoided event — this planner shows both figures side by side so the decision is explicit.
- What should the RFQ state about redundancy?
- State the configuration (N, N+1 or 2N), whether standby must be on separated electrical supply, the required changeover behaviour and time, the alarm and monitoring requirements, backup power autonomy in hours, and whether the standby machine must rotate into duty. Without this, bidders will price different things and the comparison is meaningless.
