Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Distribution — Facility Spec, Docks and Cost

Cold chain distribution for pharmaceuticals is won or lost at the dock. This page sets out the zones, dock conditioning, monitoring and redundancy to define before suppliers quote a GDP distribution centre.

Why source with ColdMatch

Dock designed, not assumed

Seals, airlock depth, conditioned dock zone and maximum staging duration written into scope.

Zone map before layout

CRT, +2/+8 °C, −20 °C, quarantine and returns sized from real order profiles.

Redundancy where product sits

N+1 on chilled and frozen plant, standby generation, UPS on controls and monitoring.

Handover points monitored

Probes at docks and staging, not only in rooms; escalation reaches a named person.

GDP evidence in the bid

Loaded mapping per zone, IQ/OQ/PQ, excursion handling and requalification cycle.

Flows that survive peak

Inbound, picking, staging and returns routed so peak throughput does not force doors open.

Comparable commercial scope

One RFQ with a shared exclusions annex so bids can be normalised line by line.

Supplier-neutral shortlisting

Manufacturers and integrators with GDP distribution references, reviewed per project.

Typical specifications we source

Typical zones
CRT +15/+25 °C, chilled +2/+8 °C, frozen −15/−25 °C, quarantine, returns, conditioned dock
Dock strategy
Sealed or refrigerated docks, airlock buffering, stated maximum staging minutes, vehicle pre-cooling
Indicative CAPEX
≈ USD 1,200–2,200 / m² CRT and ≈ USD 3,500–5,500 / m² validated chilled, excluding shell
Redundancy
N+1 chilled and frozen plant, standby generator, UPS on controls and monitoring
Monitoring
Calibrated probes per zone plus dock and staging, logged continuously, alarms escalated out of hours
Project threshold

Buyer questions answered

How do you size a pharma distribution centre?

Work from order lines and pallet movements per day per band, peak-to-average ratio and the required dispatch window — then derive pallet positions, dock doors and staging area. Refrigeration load follows from envelope transmission at the local design condition, door and dock infiltration at peak throughput, internal gains and any pull-down of inbound product. Sizing from storage volume alone consistently under-provides dock and staging capacity.

Refrigerated dock or airlock?

A conditioned dock is justified where staging is frequent, transit vehicles arrive un-precooled, or the local summer design condition is severe. Where volumes are lower, a well-sealed dock with a short airlock and a strict staging-time rule can hold the band at lower CAPEX and energy. Decide it explicitly and state it in the RFQ — otherwise one bidder prices a chilled dock and another prices a rubber seal.

What makes distribution bids incomparable?

Different assumptions on dock conditioning, generator autonomy, monitoring coverage at handover points, qualification depth and racking scope. Issue one requirement set with a shared exclusions annex, then normalise bids on duty, redundancy, design COP, validation scope, monitoring and service before comparing headline price.

Typical project scale
  • •Regional wholesale depot: 1,000–3,000 m² mixed CRT and chilled
  • •National GDP distribution centre: 3,000–12,000 m² with frozen zone and conditioned docks
  • •Multi-site distribution programme: several facilities on one comparable requirement set

Exact system sizing depends on required temperature, ambient climate, product load and turnover rate, door openings, insulation specification, storage duration, redundancy level and operating hours. ColdMatch does not manufacture equipment — we help industrial buyers compare suitable suppliers and technologies against project-specific technical and commercial requirements.

Information suppliers need to quote
  • •Country, project location and site status (greenfield or existing building)
  • •Application and product stored or processed
  • •Required temperature range and any humidity requirement
  • •Storage capacity (m², m³ or pallet positions) and daily throughput
  • •Ambient/design climate conditions at site
  • •Available power supply and backup or redundancy requirement
  • •Preferred refrigerant, if already defined by policy or regulation
  • •Indicative budget range and target commissioning date
  • •Order lines and pallet movements per day per temperature band, plus peak ratio
  • •Dock count, dock conditioning requirement and maximum staging duration
  • •Monitoring coverage expected at docks and staging, and alarm escalation path
  • •Qualification scope per zone and required power autonomy in hours

Take this to a GDP-qualified pharma RFQ

Pharma cold chain projects are judged on qualification and validation, not price alone. Confirm GDP, IQ/OQ/PQ and mapping requirements, then issue a documented RFQ.
