  5. Cold Room Panel Thickness Calculator

For commercial and industrial refrigeration projects (cold rooms, cold stores, process cooling) — not household fridges, home freezers or appliance repair. Results are planning estimates, not engineering design or safety advice; a qualified refrigeration engineer must confirm sizing before purchase.

Cold Room Insulation Panel Thickness Calculator

Room size, temperature, design ambient and core material give an indicative panel thickness, U-value, envelope area and transmission heat gain for your RFQ.

Preliminary estimate only. Thickness and heat gain are indicative. Panel suppliers confirm the design against site climate, fire code and energy targets.

Calculation method

  1. recommended thickness = temperature-band base thickness × core conductivity factor
  2. U-value = core conductivity ÷ thickness (m)
  3. envelope area = 2(L+W)H + 2LW
  4. transmission heat gain = U × envelope area × ΔT ÷ 1000

Dimensions and temperatures can be entered in metric or imperial units; the U-value calculation remains in canonical SI units.

Worked example

A 30 × 20 × 8 m frozen room at −20 °C in a 35 °C ambient uses PIR panels.

Inputs

  • • 30 × 20 × 8 m (98.4 × 65.6 × 26.2 ft)
  • • ΔT = 55 K / 99 °F temperature difference
  • • PIR conductivity 0.022 W/m·K

Calculation

  • • Recommended thickness = 125 mm (4.92 in)
  • • U = 0.022 ÷ 0.125 = 0.176 W/m²K
  • • Envelope area = 2,000 m² (21,528 ft²)
  • • Heat gain = 0.176 × 2,000 × 55 ÷ 1000 = 19.4 kW

Indicative panel thickness: 125 mm (4.92 in), with approximately 19.4 kW transmission heat gain.

Limitations

  • • The thickness rule is a planning recommendation, not a condensation or code compliance calculation.
  • • Thermal bridges, joints, doors, vapour barriers, solar gain and floor-edge losses are not modelled separately.
  • • Fire rating, structural span, wind load and hygienic finishes must be confirmed by panel suppliers and local design professionals.

Illustrative planning result only. Confirm the final design, duty, equipment selection and performance with a qualified refrigeration engineer and supplier quotation.

Buyer questions

How thick should cold room panels be?

As a common starting point: 80–100 mm PIR for chilled rooms (0 to +5 °C), 120–150 mm for frozen rooms (−18 to −25 °C) and 150–200 mm for blast freezers or −30 °C and below. Hot climates, direct sun on the roof and energy targets can justify the next thickness up.

How is transmission heat gain calculated?

Q = U × A × ΔT. U is approximately the panel's thermal conductivity divided by its thickness (PIR ≈ 0.022 W/m·K, PUR ≈ 0.024, mineral wool ≈ 0.040). A is the total envelope area and ΔT the difference between design ambient and room temperature.

PIR, PUR or mineral wool?

PIR and PUR give the lowest U-value per mm. Mineral wool is chosen where fire rating is prioritised by insurers or local code, but needs more thickness for the same heat gain. Confirm the required fire classification with your insurer and authority.

Does this replace a supplier's design?

No. Panel suppliers confirm thickness, joints, floor insulation, vapour barrier and heating under frozen floors after reviewing the site and code.
