Refrigeration Project Cost 2026 — CapEx Benchmarks per kW
How much does a refrigeration project cost? 2026 CapEx benchmarks run USD 700/kW for packaged HFC chillers to USD 2,500/kW for transcritical CO₂ plants. Compare competing supplier quotes free.
What ColdMatch delivers
- Packaged HFC chillers: USD 700–1,400/kW installed
- Industrial NH₃ plants: USD 1,200–2,200/kW with low OpEx
- Transcritical CO₂ systems: USD 1,400–2,500/kW, lowest GWP
- Pharma GDP suites: +30–50% over food-grade benchmarks
- Project finance, leasing and ECA-backed funding for qualifying CapEx

How much does an industrial cold storage project cost?
There is no single price. Industrial cold-chain projects are budgeted per kW of installed refrigeration capacity or per m³ of insulated volume, and the typical range moves with temperature level, capacity, refrigerant and system architecture, insulation specification, site climate, power quality and redundancy, plus freight, import duty and local installation rates. Published figures on this site are budgetary estimates for feasibility work, never quotations — a firm price requires a specification.
To get comparable quotations, a buyer needs to fix eight things first: capacity, temperature setpoint, product and daily throughput, site ambient conditions, power supply and backup, refrigerant preference, redundancy level, and the scope boundary (equipment, delivered, installed or turnkey EPC).
Country cost benchmarks
Prepare a project brief for costingWhat actually drives the cost of a refrigeration project?
Installed kW of cooling and the temperature level it must reach, refrigerant and system architecture, compressor and heat-rejection selection, pipework runs and pressure vessels, controls and safety systems, electrical infrastructure and backup power, plantroom civils, installation labour, freight, commissioning and the level of redundancy required. Hot ambients and weak grids raise both plant size and support scope on otherwise identical projects.
Why do quotes for the same project differ so widely?
Almost always because scope differs, not because one supplier is cheaper. One quote may cover equipment ex-works, another equipment plus installation, another full EPC with civils, power and commissioning. Redundancy level, control specification, insulation and commissioning support are the usual hidden differences. Level bids against a single written scope sheet before comparing headline prices.
How should CAPEX and operating cost be weighed?
Refrigeration is an energy asset: over ten years, electricity and maintenance usually exceed the purchase price. Variable-speed compressors, floating head pressure, correctly sized condensers, optimised defrost and heat recovery raise capital cost but shorten total cost of ownership. Ask each supplier to state expected annual kWh at design conditions so bids can be compared on lifetime cost, not just capital.
What is needed for a reliable cost estimate?
Duty per temperature level, room volumes or process loads, product throughput and entry temperature, site ambient conditions, refrigerant preference or restriction, redundancy expectation, power availability, and whether the scope is equipment-only, installed, or turnkey. With those, suppliers size real plant instead of quoting a generic package.
- •Under 150 kW packaged plant for a single room or line
- •150–500 kW plant for a processing facility
- •500 kW–2 MW central plant with multiple temperature levels
- •2 MW+ industrial plant with heat recovery and full redundancy
Exact system sizing depends on required temperature, ambient climate, product load and turnover rate, door openings, insulation specification, storage duration, redundancy level and operating hours. ColdMatch does not manufacture equipment — we help industrial buyers compare suitable suppliers and technologies against project-specific technical and commercial requirements.
- •Country, project location and site status (greenfield or existing building)
- •Application and product stored or processed
- •Required temperature range and any humidity requirement
- •Storage capacity (m², m³ or pallet positions) and daily throughput
- •Ambient/design climate conditions at site
- •Available power supply and backup or redundancy requirement
- •Preferred refrigerant, if already defined by policy or regulation
- •Indicative budget range and target commissioning date
- •Scope boundary: equipment, installed, or turnkey
- •Expected annual operating hours and load profile
- •Required annual energy figure at design conditions
- •Spares, service contract and training expectations
