Kältemittel-Umstellungsleitfaden — F-Gas, Kigali und NH₃/CO₂/HFO

Kältemittelwahl für Neubau und Retrofit: F-Gas-Verordnung, Kigali-Abbau, Naturkältemittel (NH₃, CO₂, R290) vs HFO-Gemische — TCO und Sicherheit.

Regulatory clock

EU F-gas (2024 revision) bans most HFCs >150 GWP in new commercial refrigeration by 2030; service bans on R404A already effective. Kigali locks in an 85% HFC phase-down for developed countries by 2036, 80% for A5 group 1 by 2045. Anyone buying R404A/R507 today is buying stranded capex.

Natural refrigerant decision matrix

Load >300 kW & industrial site: NH₃ low-charge (best OPEX, needs safety zoning and trained staff). Load 100–300 kW: NH₃/CO₂ cascade or CO₂ transcritical. Retail / small commercial: propane (R290) packaged or CO₂ transcritical. Occupied spaces where NH₃ prohibited: CO₂ transcritical + subcritical boosters, or HFO blend as bridge.

HFO blends — bridge only

R448A, R449A, R452A cut GWP ~65% vs R404A but still face phase-down and are 3–5× the price of naturals long-term. Use only for near-term retrofits where full plant replacement is 5+ years out.

Safety & permitting

NH₃: EN 378 / ANSI IIAR classification, machinery room ventilation, gas detection, competent-operator training. CO₂ transcritical: pressure certification (>90 bar), pressure relief design, dew-point management. R290: charge limits (150 g in most jurisdictions, higher with EN 60335-2-89 amendments), ATEX for machinery room.

TCO horizon

Over 15-year plant life, NH₃ low-charge or NH₃/CO₂ cascade is 20–35% cheaper than HFO blend for industrial loads. CO₂ transcritical wins in temperate climates and pushes ahead further as electricity prices rise. HFO always loses on refrigerant quota cost by year 8.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Can I still buy R404A equipment in 2026?

In the EU, no for new systems. In non-EU markets, yes but the F-gas ripple + Kigali quota means refrigerant price will spike 4–8× by 2030. Not a sound capex decision.

Is CO₂ transcritical really viable above 40°C ambient?

Yes with parallel compression and ejectors, but efficiency gap vs NH₃/CO₂ cascade widens. Above ~40°C design ambient (Gulf, Sahel, tropical), cascade wins. Below 32°C ambient, transcritical is the default for new frozen DCs.
