EN 378 (EU) and ASHRAE 15 (US) set safety, design and marking requirements for refrigeration systems by refrigerant class, charge limit and occupancy category. ISO 5149 is the international equivalent adopted in many markets. NH₃ plants add IIAR codes (US) and site-specific PSM (Process Safety Management). Buyers must require system-level compliance evidence, not component-only declarations.
Why this regulation matters
A refrigeration plant that is not EN 378 / ASHRAE 15 compliant cannot be legally commissioned, cannot obtain insurance and typically fails FM Global / VdS engineering review — blocking use and financing.

A1 (non-toxic, non-flammable): R134a, R410A, R1234yf blends. A2L (mildly flammable): R32, R1234yf, R1234ze. A3 (highly flammable): R290 (propane), R600a. B2L (toxic, mildly flammable): R717 (ammonia). B1 (toxic): historically R123. Class dictates charge limits by occupancy and required safety systems (ventilation, detection, ESD).
