At 2,240 m, air density is roughly 77 % of sea level. Air-cooled condensers reject less heat, fans move less mass, and motor cooling is reduced — all for the same nameplate. Any equipment selection made at sea-level conditions will underperform. State the site altitude in the design basis and require every supplier to confirm derated performance, in writing, at your design ambient.
Seismic design is a code requirement affecting rack anchoring, plant anchoring, pipework restraints and flexible connections. It is also a common source of scope ambiguity: the racking supplier assumes the building engineer covers it, the mechanical contractor assumes the racking supplier does. Assign it explicitly.
The market itself is high-throughput. Wholesale market and grocery distribution flows mean heavy door cycling and rapid turnover, so infiltration control, dock buffers and fast doors carry more weight than long-dwell storage optimisation. Where the facility handles imported produce, add pre-cooling capacity sized to inbound peaks.
Refrigeration costs in Mexico City
Mexican installation costs are competitive, and proximity to US manufacturing shortens lead times for many components. Altitude derating, however, increases installed capacity for the same delivered duty, so cost per kW of usable duty is higher than the headline equipment pricing suggests.
Energy tariffs for industrial users are meaningful, and demand charges can be a large part of the bill. Ask bidders to state peak electrical demand in kW as well as annual kWh, and to describe how the control strategy limits simultaneous starts — controlling demand charges is often worth more than a marginal efficiency gain.

The cold storage RFQ process in Mexico City
Two clauses do most of the work on a Mexico City RFQ: guaranteed duty at stated altitude and ambient, and explicit allocation of seismic design responsibility. Include both, and require written confirmation rather than a generic compliance statement.
Require identical returns: derated duty at altitude, peak electrical demand and annual kWh, refrigerant and charge, seismic design scope and code reference, door and dock strategy, programme and Mexican references.
