How to size a cold room, step by step
  1. 1. Fix the stored quantity Start from pallets or tonnes held at peak, not average. Multiply daily throughput by dwell days to get the pallet positions the room must hold.
  2. 2. Convert pallets to floor area Allow roughly 1.6–2.2 m² of gross floor area per pallet position for racked rooms including aisles, and add door, staging and circulation space.
  3. 3. Set the clear height Clear internal height drives how many pallet levels fit. Deduct evaporator, sprinkler and structure allowances from the building height before counting levels.
  4. 4. Fix temperature and design ambient Room set point and the site design ambient decide most of the load. A +2 °C room in a 43 °C climate is a different project from the same room at 30 °C.
  5. 5. Estimate the refrigeration duty Add transmission, product pull-down, infiltration and internal gains, then apply a safety margin. Use the cooling-load calculator for the planning band.
