What Affects Cold Storage OPEX?

Energy, efficiency, insulation, door openings, defrost, setpoints, turnover, labour, maintenance, refrigerant and spoilage — the operating costs that decide whether a cold store works.

Quick answer

Energy, efficiency, insulation, door openings, defrost, setpoints, turnover, labour, maintenance, refrigerant and spoilage — the operating costs that decide whether a cold store works. Electricity tariff and consumption, compressor and system efficiency, insulation quality, door openings and air infiltration, defrost strategy, setpoint, product turnover, labour, maintenance, refrigerant management, monitoring and compliance, plus spoilage and product loss.

Operating cost, not capital cost, determines whether a cold storage investment pays back. Energy is usually the largest controllable line, but product loss can dwarf everything else in a single bad week.

Energy: consumption and tariff

Two identical facilities in different tariff regimes have completely different economics. Demand charges and peak pricing can be as important as kWh.

Efficiency and part-load behaviour

Plant sized only for the peak day runs inefficiently for most of the year. Variable-speed drives, floating head pressure and good evaporator control usually beat headline compressor efficiency.

Envelope and door discipline

Insulation quality, vapour sealing, air locks and high-speed doors decide how much cold you buy twice. Traffic profile belongs in the RFQ.

Defrost and setpoint

Demand-based defrost beats fixed timers, and running colder than the product requires is a permanent penalty with no benefit.

Labour, maintenance and refrigerant

Frozen picking is slower and needs rotation. Planned maintenance, spares and refrigerant management must be budgeted from year one, including phase-down exposure for HFC systems.

Spoilage and product loss

Redundancy and alarms are usually justified by the value of protected stock rather than by energy savings.
