Pharmaceutical GDP cold storage room with temperature monitoring

For commercial and industrial refrigeration projects (cold rooms, cold stores, process cooling) — not household fridges, home freezers or appliance repair. Results are planning estimates, not engineering design or safety advice; a qualified refrigeration engineer must confirm sizing before purchase.

Pharmaceutical cold room sizing: buyer questions

How do you size refrigeration for a pharmaceutical cold room?
Build the load from transmission through the insulated envelope (driven by ambient minus room temperature and panel U-value), product pull-down for the daily intake, door and airlock infiltration, and internal gains from lighting, fans, defrost and people. Divide the 24-hour load by the design running hours, then apply the redundancy factor. For GDP storage the installed capacity is normally the duty times N+1, not the bare duty.
What temperature is required for pharmaceutical cold storage?
Most vaccines and biologics are stored at +2 °C to +8 °C. General pharmaceutical stock sits at controlled room temperature, +15 °C to +25 °C. Frozen product is typically −20 °C, and mRNA vaccines, cell and gene therapies and many clinical samples require −70 °C to −80 °C. The applicable band comes from the product's marketing authorisation, not from a generic standard.
How much does a pharmaceutical cold room cost?
Indicative planning ranges are roughly USD 3,500–5,500 per m² for a validated +2/+8 °C walk-in, USD 6,000–9,000 per m² at −20 °C and USD 12,000–18,000 per m² for an −80 °C room. Redundancy, monitoring depth, mapping and IQ/OQ/PQ qualification, finishes and country all move the figure materially.
What redundancy should a GDP cold room have?
N+1 refrigeration with a standby generator and UPS on controls and monitoring is the common baseline for GDP storage, so no single compressor or grid failure breaches the band. 2N is used where a single excursion would write off very high-value inventory. The level is a documented risk decision for the operator, not a fixed rule.
Is this calculator an engineering design?
No. It produces preliminary planning figures so you can budget and brief suppliers with realistic numbers. Final sizing, mapping strategy and validation belong to the supplier's detailed design and your qualification programme. ColdMatch Group connects project buyers with manufacturers and solution providers; it is not a manufacturer, engineering contractor or regulatory advisor.

Worked example

A 200 m² × 4 m +2/+8 °C GDP room in a 32 °C ambient, taking 4 t/day of product through a medium door regime on 20 running hours, lands at roughly 12–18 kW of design duty. Specified N+1, the installed plant is around 1.5× that figure, and with monitoring, mapping and IQ/OQ/PQ the indicative CAPEX sits in the high six figures.

Calculation method

  1. 1. Volume = floor area × height; surface = 2 × area + 4 × √area × height
  2. 2. Transmission (kW) = surface × panel W/m²K × (ambient − room) ÷ 1000
  3. 3. Product (kW) = intake t/day × 1000 × 3.2 kJ/kg·K × 15 K ÷ 86,400
  4. 4. Internal (kW) = volume × 0.004 + area × 0.012; total × door-traffic factor
  5. 5. Duty = daily load × 24 ÷ run hours; installed = duty × redundancy factor (N, N+1, 2N)

Calculations run in SI (m, m², m³, kW, kg, °C). Imperial equivalents: 1 m² = 10.76 ft², 1 m³ = 35.31 ft³, 1 kW = 3,412 BTU/h = 0.284 TR, 1 t = 2,205 lb, °F = °C × 1.8 + 32.

Worked example

Default GDP room for +2…+8 °C storage.

Inputs

  • • 200 m² (2,153 ft²) × 4 m (13.1 ft)
  • • Ambient 32 °C (89.6 °F)
  • • 4 t/day intake
  • • 20 h run time

Calculation

  • • Volume = 800 m³ (28,250 ft³)
  • • Product = 4,000 × 3.2 × 15 ÷ 86,400 ≈ 2.2 kW (7,600 BTU/h)
  • • Internal = 800 × 0.004 + 200 × 0.012 = 5.6 kW
  • • Pallets ≈ ⌊200 × 0.55 ÷ 1.2⌋ × ⌊4 ÷ 1.6⌋ = 91 × 2 = 182

≈ 182 pallet positions; transmission and the redundancy choice set the installed duty shown on the page.

Limitations

  • • Planning model only — GDP mapping, qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) and regulator expectations decide the final design.
  • • Assumes product arrives about 15 K above set point; validated pre-conditioned intake reduces the load.
  • • Redundancy factors are typical configurations, not a risk assessment.

Illustrative planning result only. Confirm the final design, duty, equipment selection and performance with a qualified refrigeration engineer and supplier quotation.

Follows the ColdMatch calculation standard: method, worked example, limitations and imperial units.
