Who this helps
Owners, developers and procurement teams considering Cold Storage Cost Optimization — CAPEX & OPEX Benchmark Guide.
Decision supported
Define product duty, site constraints and comparable scope before selecting equipment or requesting proposals.
Review status
A dated technical review is not recorded for every legacy guide. Confirm current product specifications and local requirements with the responsible specialists; no fresh review is implied.
Free access
Read, calculate and use checklists without an account, payment or lead submission. Requesting procurement support is optional.
Sizing, temperature and energy checklist
  • Record product, packaging, incoming/target temperatures, humidity and permitted excursions from your product specification.
  • Record peak stock, daily intake, dwell time, loading schedule and seasonal peaks from your own operating records.
  • Confirm grid connection, usable site area, ambient conditions, water and transport interfaces.
  • Use declared operating hours, load, tariff and system efficiency; preserve assumptions when comparing scenarios.
  • Have the refrigeration engineer and responsible food/pharma quality lead verify the scope before equipment selection.
Destination, season & logistics checklist

A project evidence checklist, not a seasonal forecast. Complete it for each destination using dated operating records, product specifications and responsible local specialists.

Destination & handoffs
Record origin, destination, transport mode, loading/unloading points, planned transit and expected waiting time. Identify who monitors temperature and handles excursions at each handoff.
Season & peak capacity
Record actual peak months, daily intake, dispatch, dwell time and highest stock from dated records. Label forecasts separately; do not turn an annual national trade indicator into a monthly demand estimate.
Temperature & energy duty
Use the product's approved temperature range, incoming temperature, packaging and loading schedule. Record site ambient assumptions, door-opening frequency, power availability and tariff period for capacity and energy comparisons.
Site & unresolved risks
Confirm grid, water where required, vehicle access and dock interfaces. Record the evidence owner, source date and unresolved constraint; leave unknown inputs blank rather than presenting them as verified.

CAPEX per pallet benchmarks

ColdMatch's shared 2026 planning baseline: USD 1,200–2,600 per pallet position installed and USD 1,800–5,000 turnkey. Frozen, automated high-bay and GDP pharma scope (typically 30–50% above an equivalent chilled room) sit toward the upper end. Figures exclude land and grid connection and are indicative only — confirm with supplier quotations.

Energy levers ranked by ROI

1) Envelope upgrade (300 mm PIR vs 200 mm) — 8–14% kWh reduction, 3–5 yr payback. 2) EC fan evaporators + VFD — 12–18% payback <2 yr. 3) Floating head pressure — 6–10% zero capex. 4) Heat recovery to CIP/dock — 15–25% payback 3–4 yr. 5) PV + ice-bank thermal storage — 20–35% depending on grid tariff. Indicative ranges only: actual savings depend on the measured baseline — confirm with a site energy audit.

Refrigerant lifecycle cost

NH₃ low-charge: lowest OPEX, highest CAPEX (safety zoning). NH₃/CO₂ cascade: best above 300 kW. CO₂ transcritical: standard for new frozen DCs below 32°C ambient. R290 propane: best for small standalone. Avoid R404A — F-gas phase-down makes retrofit inevitable within 5–7 years.

Procurement discipline

Bundle refrigeration + envelope + racking + BMS in one integrated EPC RFQ — split contracts add 8–15% via coordination gaps. Require guaranteed energy performance (kWh/m³·yr) with penalty clauses. Benchmark 3+ suppliers on identical scope.

Questions fréquentes

How much can I really cut OPEX on an existing cold store?

Typical realistic package: EC fans + VFDs + floating head pressure + LED + door discipline is often quoted at 18–28% kWh reduction with 24–36 month payback. Indicative only, not a guaranteed result — confirm against a measured baseline.

Is ASRS worth it if labour is cheap?

Below labour cost of €18–20/hr, conventional VNA with lithium forklifts usually wins on CAPEX flexibility. Above €25/hr, ASRS payback drops under 8 years even at moderate throughput.
