Envelope first, always
300 mm PIR walls, 350 mm roof, thermally broken doors, and rapid-roll door discipline typically cut load 20–30% before you touch the compressor. Retrofits: air-tightness testing and door replacement pay back in 24–36 months.
Compressor room controls
Floating head pressure (adjust condensing to ambient) — 6–12% savings, zero capex. VFDs on screw compressors: 8–15%. Auto-purger on ammonia: 2–4% but easy. Sequence compressors to load, not schedule.
Heat recovery & thermal storage
Ammonia condenser desuperheat delivers 60–85°C water for CIP, dock heating, and process pre-heat — covers 30–60% of hot-water demand. Ice-bank thermal storage lets you run compressors on cheap night tariff or PV surplus, shift 15–25% of daily load.
PV + battery + grid
Roof + car-park canopy PV on cold stores routinely delivers 35–55% self-consumption without batteries. Add ice-bank thermal storage before considering lithium batteries — thermal storage is 4–6× cheaper per kWh shifted.
ISO 50001 & measurement
Sub-metering by zone and by asset is the foundation. Baseline kWh/m³·yr per zone, track weekly, investigate deviations >5%. Most cold stores discover 8–12% hidden waste in the first 90 days of proper metering.
الأسئلة الشائعة
Does floating head pressure risk oil return problems?
On modern screw compressors with oil-management skids, no — set a minimum floor pressure that maintains oil return velocity, typically 30–35 bar for NH₃, and audit oil levels monthly for the first quarter.
Payback on rooftop PV for a cold store?
5–8 years typical in temperate markets, 3–5 years in high-irradiance markets (Spain, Mexico, MENA, Australia). Faster with grid demand-charge tariffs where PV shaves peak.
