What are the stages of an industrial refrigeration project?
Load survey and duty definition, concept design and refrigerant selection, budget and business case, tender and supplier comparison, detailed engineering, manufacture and delivery, mechanical and electrical installation, pressure testing and charging, commissioning under load, operator training and handover. Weak load definition at stage one is the single most common cause of re-pricing later.
How is refrigeration load calculated for a project?
Total load combines transmission through walls, roof and floor, product pull-down and respiration heat, air infiltration through doors and dock openings, fan, defrost, lighting and personnel loads, plus a design margin. Frozen duty, high door traffic and hot-humid ambients push installed capacity well above the naive volume-based estimate, which is why comparable quotes require throughput data, not just m³.
When should ammonia, CO2 or an HFO system be considered?
Ammonia suits large single-site industrial loads above roughly 300 kW where a machinery room, trained operators and safety compliance are viable — it delivers the best efficiency per kW installed. Transcritical CO2 suits mid-size and cooler-climate sites and locations where ammonia is restricted; performance improves with parallel compression or ejectors in hot climates. HFO or blended synthetic systems suit smaller, distributed or unattended plant where an operator regime is not practical.
What redundancy should an industrial plant have?
Match redundancy to the cost of a loss event. Multi-compressor plant with N+1 capacity, dual condenser circuits, dual refrigerant paths on critical rooms, generator-backed control and alarm systems, and mapped restart procedures. For pharmaceutical and high-value frozen inventory, backup generation for the full refrigeration load is normal; for short-dwell chilled goods, thermal inertia may cover a short outage.
