Industrial refrigeration and cold-store manufacturers compared
For cold storage warehouses and food or pharma plants, the main choice is the system type: ammonia, CO₂ transcritical, an NH₃/CO₂ cascade or packaged HFO/HFC units. Choose that before the brand. GEA, Johnson Controls, Mayekawa and component makers such as Danfoss and Bitzer cover different parts of that scope. This page compares them by category so you can write one like-for-like RFQ. It covers fixed plant only. Truck and container refrigeration is a separate buyer journey.

- Heat rejection and low-charge ammonia layouts.
- Ask in your RFQ
- Water use, water treatment and plume or Legionella controls.
ColdMatch Group is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a distributor for any manufacturer named here. Names and product categories come from each company's public information and are given for fair, category-level comparison only. Product line-ups change, so confirm current models with the manufacturer or its local partner. ColdMatch does not put buyers in direct contact with manufacturers: you send one project request, our team reviews and structures it, then contacts suitable suppliers for you and presents organised responses. Buyer service is free; minimum B2B project size is USD 250,000.
Project checklist before you request quotes
- State required air and product-core temperatures separately, including product-specific holding limits and freezing cycle time. Do not infer blast duty from a room setpoint.
- Capacity: pallet positions or internal volume, daily product intake and its incoming temperature.
- Site: ambient design temperature, grid capacity (kVA), water availability and backup power.
- Refrigerant preference and local rules (EN 378, IIAR 2, ASHRAE 15, F-gas, PSM/RMP thresholds).
- Compliance: HACCP for food, EU GDP (2013/C 343/01) or local GDP for pharma, temperature mapping and monitoring.
- Total cost of ownership: capital cost, energy over 15–20 years, maintenance contract, refrigerant and spare parts.
- Delivery model: equipment only, design-build contractor or EPC, plus timeline and commissioning acceptance tests.
Component OEM, refrigeration integrator or turnkey EPC?
For European industrial projects, the commercial distinction is responsibility, not a brand league table. Retain a manufacturer-led package when you already have competent design and installation teams; compare an EPC offer when you need a defined wider delivery scope. ColdMatch supports the buyer's managed procurement, not the design or construction contract.
| Delivery model | Scope to request | Buyer responsibility to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Component OEM | Selected components, rating conditions, interfaces, documentation and component warranty. | Appoint the complete-system designer, installer and commissioning lead. |
| Refrigeration integrator | Designed plant, installation boundary, controls, performance tests, training and service exclusions. | Agree civil, envelope, utility and permit interfaces outside the plant contract. |
| Turnkey EPC contractor | Named design/build responsibilities, subcontractors, programme, permits allocation, acceptance and exclusions. | Verify the actual contract and country-specific capability; turnkey is not an automatic guarantee. |
| ColdMatch managed procurement | Buyer brief review, supplier approaches on the buyer's behalf and organized responses for comparison. | Buyer and appointed professionals approve engineering, compliance, contracts and investment assumptions. |
Technical FAQ
Is ammonia or CO₂ better for a cold storage warehouse?
Neither wins everywhere. Ammonia (R-717) requires project-specific toxicity, charge and operating-safety assessment. CO₂ (R-744) requires high-pressure design and assessment of asphyxiation risks in confined spaces. Compare central, packaged, cascade and transcritical proposals at the same duty, ambient and part-load profile, with stated energy assumptions and local maintenance capability. A refrigerant name alone does not establish safety or efficiency.
What regulations apply to industrial ammonia systems?
In the US, OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Program (40 CFR Part 68) apply above 10,000 lb of anhydrous ammonia. Design commonly follows ANSI/IIAR 2 and ASHRAE 15. In Europe, EN 378 covers refrigerating system safety, and the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU applies. Check local rules as well: these are starting points, not legal advice.
How does the EU F-gas Regulation affect refrigerant choice?
Regulation (EU) 2024/573, in force since 11 March 2024, continues the HFC phase-down and adds bans on placing certain high-GWP equipment on the market. For long-life industrial plant, this pushes buyers toward natural refrigerants (NH₃, CO₂, hydrocarbons) or low-GWP options. Check the dates that apply to your equipment category.
How should I compare manufacturer quotes fairly?
Fix the design basis first: room temperatures, internal volume or pallet positions, product load, door traffic, ambient design temperature and redundancy. Then compare capital cost, rated efficiency at your conditions, refrigerant charge, service coverage, warranty and 15–20-year energy cost, not purchase price alone.
Can ColdMatch connect me directly with GEA or another manufacturer?
No. ColdMatch runs a managed process: we review your project, structure the RFQ, contact suitable suppliers and present organised responses. We do not provide manufacturer contact details or direct introductions.
Does an OEM quotation include turnkey cold-store construction?
Not automatically. GEA and Mayekawa publish equipment and engineered solution categories, while BITZER's published scope is refrigeration components. None proves that a particular offer includes civil works, envelope, power, installation, permits or local service. Request a responsibility matrix and named contracting entity; compare the actual quotation, not the brand name.
