Cold room insulation panels: materials and thickness

The insulated envelope decides how much heat the refrigeration plant must remove for the life of the building. Panel core, thickness, joints and floor build-up all matter as much as the refrigeration equipment.

Short answer

Most cold rooms use insulated sandwich panels with a PIR or PUR core (thermal conductivity around 0.022–0.024 W/m·K per manufacturer declarations). Typical planning thicknesses are about 80–120 mm for chilled rooms and 150–200 mm for freezers at −18 to −25 °C. Mineral wool panels are used where a non-combustible core is required but need greater thickness. Freezer floors need insulation, a vapour barrier and underfloor heating or ventilation.

1. Panel core options

The core sets insulation value, fire behaviour and weight.

  • PIR: good insulation and generally better fire performance than PUR.
  • PUR: similar insulation value, widely used in cold rooms.
  • Mineral wool: non-combustible core options, higher conductivity (about 0.035–0.040 W/m·K), so thicker panels are needed.

2. Choosing thickness

Thickness follows the temperature difference between the room and the design outside temperature, and the heat flow you accept.

  • Thickness ≈ conductivity × temperature difference ÷ accepted heat flow (often about 8 W/m²).
  • Round up to the nearest standard panel size.
  • Our panel-thickness calculator gives a first estimate by temperature.

3. Floors, joints and vapour control

Most performance problems come from joints, penetrations and floors rather than the panel itself.

  • Sealed, tight panel joints and a continuous vapour barrier on the warm side.
  • Insulated floor with underfloor heating or ventilated slab for freezers.
  • Thermal breaks at doors, columns and pipe penetrations.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should freezer panels be?

For −18 to −25 °C, PIR/PUR panels of about 150–200 mm are common. The final thickness depends on the outside design temperature, energy targets and local rules.

What is the difference between PIR and PUR panels?

Both insulate similarly, but PIR has a different chemical structure that generally gives better fire performance. Check each product's declared fire classification.

Does a chilled cold room need floor insulation?

Rooms above 0 °C sometimes use only perimeter insulation, but freezer rooms always need an insulated floor with frost protection below.

What is the thermal conductivity of PIR panels?

Around 0.022–0.024 W/m·K according to manufacturer declarations, compared with roughly 0.035–0.040 W/m·K for mineral wool.

What fire rating do insulated sandwich panels have?

It varies by core and product. Mineral wool panels can reach non-combustible classes, and PIR usually performs better than PUR. Always check the product's certified class against local requirements.

How long do cold room panels last?

Service life depends on joint sealing, vapour control, cleaning and damage from trucks. Ask suppliers for their stated warranty and maintenance requirements rather than relying on a general figure.
