Capacity Planning

Cold room capacity planning — from product volume to pallet positions

Cold room capacity depends on usable volume, racking layout, air circulation clearances and daily throughput — not just floor area. A 1,000 m³ room typically holds 150–400 pallet positions depending on height and racking. ColdMatch helps you size correctly before suppliers quote.

What ColdMatch delivers

  • Usable storage is 60–75% of gross volume after aisles, evaporator clearance and door zones
  • Clear height is the biggest lever: 12 m high-bay holds ~3× a 5 m room on the same footprint
  • Mobile racking adds 40–60% more positions vs wide-aisle layouts
  • Size for peak inventory plus 15–25% growth headroom, not average stock
  • Throughput (pallets in/out per day) drives door, dock and ante-room sizing
How matching works

ColdMatch helps buyers prepare cold chain RFQs and source suitable suppliers.

Directory pages are for discovery and SEO. ColdMatch is not an automatic marketplace and does not directly connect buyers with refrigeration manufacturers — supplier matching and introductions are managed manually by ColdMatch.

  1. 1. You submit a cold room, cold storage, industrial refrigeration, pharma cold chain, food logistics or mobile cold room request.
  2. 2. ColdMatch reviews your request and prepares the project brief — temperature range, product type, country, size, budget and operational needs.
  3. 3. Only after the brief is understood, ColdMatch searches for suitable suppliers.
  4. 4. David continues with you personally and introduces suppliers only when relevant.

Supplier and manufacturer listings are provided for research, transparency and discovery only. ColdMatch Group does not provide automatic buyer-supplier introductions. Every cold chain project request is reviewed manually by David / ColdMatch Group, and supplier introductions are made only after internal approval.

Buyer questions answered

How do I convert product volume into cold room capacity?

Start from peak inventory in pallet equivalents, add 15–25% growth headroom, then map to racking: wide-aisle layouts store roughly 0.15–0.25 pallets per m³, mobile racking 0.3–0.4, and high-bay automated stores more. Clear height is the biggest lever — tripling from 5 m to 12 m roughly triples positions on the same footprint.

What capacity details do suppliers need before quoting?

Pallet count at peak, pallet dimensions and weight, product type and packaging, daily throughput in and out, temperature setpoint, site climate, and available power. Missing throughput or peak-inventory figures is the most common reason first quotes are unusable.

Should I oversize now or expand later?

Sizing for peak plus growth headroom is usually cheaper: expanding a running cold room typically costs 1.5–2× the upfront capacity because of downtime, re-engineering and refrigeration re-balancing. If future volume is uncertain, design foundations and refrigeration headers for expansion but build in phases.

Typical project scale
  • 100–500 pallet walk-in cold room
  • 500–2,000 pallet regional store
  • 2,000–10,000 pallet distribution facility
  • 10,000+ pallet high-bay automated store

Exact system sizing depends on required temperature, ambient climate, product load and turnover rate, door openings, insulation specification, storage duration, redundancy level and operating hours. ColdMatch does not manufacture equipment — we help industrial buyers compare suitable suppliers and technologies against project-specific technical and commercial requirements.

Information suppliers need to quote
  • Country, project location and site status (greenfield or existing building)
  • Application and product stored or processed
  • Required temperature range and any humidity requirement
  • Storage capacity (m², m³ or pallet positions) and daily throughput
  • Ambient/design climate conditions at site
  • Available power supply and backup or redundancy requirement
  • Preferred refrigerant, if already defined by policy or regulation
  • Indicative budget range and target commissioning date
