- When does cold warehouse automation pay back?
- Automation usually pays back where labour cost is high, land is expensive, throughput is stable and the store runs at low temperature where working conditions are hard. Payback lengthens sharply when SKU mix or throughput is volatile.
- Does automation reduce refrigeration energy?
- Often yes, indirectly: high-bay automated stores hold more pallets in a smaller envelope surface area per pallet, and require less door activity and lighting. Airflow design in narrow crane aisles becomes more critical, so evaporator layout must be engineered for the racking geometry.
- What is the biggest risk in an automated cold store project?
- Interface responsibility. Refrigeration, envelope, racking, cranes or shuttles and the WMS/WCS are frequently supplied by different parties. Unless the RFQ assigns responsibility for interfaces, commissioning and downtime performance, gaps appear late and cost real money.
