ISO 22000 is the international food-safety management standard. It layers HACCP with prerequisite programmes (PRPs / operational PRPs) and the ISO management-system framework (context, leadership, risk, improvement). For cold-chain buyers, ISO 22000 certification is stronger evidence of ongoing capability than a standalone HACCP plan.
Why this regulation matters
ISO 22000 is recognised by every major GFSI benchmark (via FSSC 22000) and is often required by EU/UK/US retailers, pharma customers and government tenders. It signals a management system, not just a document.

Cold-storage operators, food processors, 3PL/logistics providers, ingredient traders and any organisation in the food chain that wants a certifiable management system.
ISO 22000 vs FSSC 22000 vs BRCGS
ISO 22000 alone is not GFSI-recognised. FSSC 22000 = ISO 22000 + sector-specific PRPs (ISO/TS 22002 series) + additional FSSC requirements, and IS GFSI-recognised. BRCGS Storage & Distribution is a separate GFSI standard tailored to warehousing. Buyers should specify which one they will accept.

- ✕Choosing ISO 22000 when the customer actually requires FSSC 22000 (GFSI-recognised).
- ✕Copying a template FSMS without integrating actual site processes.

Do we need ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000?
If your customers require a GFSI-recognised standard (most EU/UK/US retailers do), go directly to FSSC 22000, BRCGS or SQF. Standalone ISO 22000 is fine only if your buyers accept it explicitly.
