Project overview

An Australian red-meat exporter engaged ColdMatch Group to structure the tender for a new blast freezing and export cold storage facility serving Asia and the Middle East. The scope covered blast tunnels, storage, WMS and reefer dispatch.

Challenge

  • Peak-season throughput of 80 tonnes/day with < 24 h core-temperature pull-down.
  • Simultaneous MSA (Australia), GACC (China) and Halal audit readiness.
  • Ammonia charge minimisation to meet local AS/NZS safety and setback rules.

Solution

  • Two-stage low-charge ammonia plant with N+1 compressor redundancy.
  • Four blast tunnels sized for carton and quarter-beef load profiles.
  • WMS with lot-level traceability, EDI to export agents and reefer plug management.

Result

  • Passed MSA, GACC and Halal audits on first inspection.
  • 18% lower kWh/tonne frozen vs. incumbent facility.
  • Reefer despatch cycle time reduced from 90 to 45 minutes.

Scope of works

  • 4 × tunnel blast freezers (−35 °C)
  • 12,000-pallet storage at −22 °C
  • Low-charge two-stage NH3 plant
  • WMS with lot traceability and EDI
  • Reefer plug bank and despatch dock
