Factory Inspection Guide for Refrigeration Equipment
A factory inspection replaces the site problem — where fixing costs 5–10× more. Even for repeat suppliers, one properly scheduled inspection catches most defects before the equipment leaves the plant.
Use three inspection points: initial production check (IPC) at 20–30% completion, during production check (DPC) at 50–70%, and pre-shipment inspection (PSI) at 100% before container loading.
The three inspection points
IPC catches raw-material and specification mismatches. DPC catches workmanship issues while rework is still cheap. PSI verifies conformity to purchase order and packing before shipment.
- IPC (Initial Production Check) — verify raw materials and specifications match PO
- DPC (During Production Check) — verify workmanship at 50–70% completion
- PSI (Pre-Shipment Inspection) — verify finished goods and packing before container seal
What to inspect on refrigeration equipment
Nameplate data vs PO. Refrigerant charge and pressure test records. Compressor model and serial number. Insulation thickness. Panel joint tolerances. Door frame squareness. Controller model and firmware version. Painting and marking. Spare parts kit and manuals.
Third-party vs first-party inspection
Third-party inspection agencies (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, TÜV) cost USD 400–1,200 per day and provide independent reports. First-party (buyer's engineer) is best for turnkey projects with unique specifications.
Common defects caught at PSI
Wrong voltage or frequency stamping, insulation thickness below spec, missing electrical certification stickers, wrong refrigerant charge, packing inadequate for sea freight, missing manuals or spare parts.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a factory inspection cost?
USD 400–1,200 per inspector-day for third-party agencies (SGS, BV, Intertek). Add USD 200–600 for reports and photography. Budget 1–3 days per inspection point.
When is factory inspection worth skipping?
For repeat orders from a certified supplier with strong track record and low-value catalog items (<USD 20K), a documented FAT plus first-article inspection is often sufficient. Complex custom equipment always justifies inspection.
What is AQL?
Acceptable Quality Level — the maximum percentage of defective units in a sample lot that will still be accepted. AQL 1.0–2.5 is standard for capital equipment; lower AQL = tighter sampling = more inspection cost.
