Compressor faults

Why does a cold room compressor short cycle? Causes and next steps

Every start stresses the motor windings, contacts and lubrication. Repeated short cycles shorten compressor life, raise energy use and often precede a failure that turns into a temperature excursion. The pattern of the cycling is the best clue to its cause.

Short answer

Short cycling means the compressor runs for only a few minutes, stops, and restarts repeatedly. In cold rooms the usual causes are a low-pressure switch tripping (low refrigerant charge, iced or blocked evaporator, failing expansion valve), a high-pressure or thermal trip (dirty condenser, failed condenser fan, high ambient), controller differential set too narrow, or plant oversized for the actual load. Diagnosis needs gauges and electrical tests by a qualified, certified technician — do not reset trips repeatedly.

This is planning-level guidance for facility owners and procurement teams. It is not a remote diagnosis. Refrigerant handling, electrical work and pressure-system service must be carried out by qualified refrigeration professionals.

Symptoms to look for

  • •Compressor runs only a few minutes before stopping
  • •Frequent clicking of contactors
  • •Room struggles to hold setpoint despite constant activity
  • •Frost on suction line or evaporator icing
  • •High-pressure or overload alarms on the controller

Diagnostic decision tree

  1. 1. Does the controller log show a low-pressure trip?

Yes → Suspect low charge (leak), iced/blocked evaporator or expansion valve — technician with gauges and leak check.

No → Check high-pressure and overload trips.

  2. 2. Does it show a high-pressure or thermal overload trip?

Yes → Inspect condenser coil cleanliness, condenser fans and ambient air around the unit.

    No → Check thermostat settings.

  3. 3. Is the thermostat differential very narrow or the probe badly placed?

Yes → Correct differential and probe position per manufacturer guidance.

    No → Consider capacity match.

  4. 4. Was the plant sized for a much larger load than today's?

Yes → Oversizing — ask about capacity control (staging/inverter) in a retrofit brief.

No → Escalate to a full service diagnosis.

1. Read the logs before touching anything

Most modern controllers record the reason for each stop. Export a few days of data: which switch stops the compressor tells you far more than how often it stops.

2. Refrigerant work requires certification

Leak checks, charge adjustment and recovery of fluorinated refrigerants must be done by certified personnel under F-gas rules in the EU and Section 608 in the US. Topping up without finding the leak repeats the fault.

3. When oversizing is the cause

A compressor sized for peak harvest or a larger room cycles in normal operation. Capacity control (multiple compressors, unloading or variable speed) is a retrofit decision best compared with the energy and lifecycle tools.

4. Repair or retrofit

If the plant is old, uses a high-GWP refrigerant and has repeated faults, compare repair against retrofit with the compressor retrofit guide before committing spend.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Assumptions

  • • Chilled room at 2 °C
  • • Controller log shows 9 starts per hour over a week
  • • Low-pressure trips recorded before most stops
  • • Evaporator coil partly iced
Starts per hour (logged)9

Upgrade questionOnly if fault-free plant still cycles

The evidence points to an evaporator or charge problem, not compressor replacement. Repair and leak-check first; collect a week of logs afterwards before deciding on any retrofit. Use the manufacturer's maximum starts-per-hour figure for your compressor, not a generic number.
