CAPEX
Blast rooms: USD 120K–700K depending on capacity. IQF lines: USD 350K–3.5M. Per tonne of daily capacity, batch is 40–60% cheaper for small-mid volumes.
OPEX
IQF SEC 80–140 kWh/t; blast 90–160 kWh/t. At full utilisation IQF is cheaper per tonne; at low utilisation blast wins.
Energy efficiency
IQF freezing time is short (seconds to minutes) but energy per tonne is high due to fan power and dehydration. Blast is slower but more energy-efficient per tonne at high loading.
Environmental impact
Both technologies use industrial refrigerants (NH₃, CO₂, HFC). IQF has higher dehydration loss (0.5–2%) — a real product loss impact.
Maintenance
Blast rooms: simple, few moving parts. IQF: belt tension, drum bearings, hygienic CIP — more maintenance skill required.
Applications
Blast: whole cuts, packaged product, mixed SKUs, small-mid batches. IQF: uniform small pieces (berries, shrimp, nuggets), high-volume single-product lines.

Decision guidance
Choose blast freezing if you process packaged product, mixed SKUs, whole cuts or throughput is below 500 kg/h. Choose IQF if your product is uniform small pieces, your throughput exceeds 500 kg/h continuous, or free-flowing bulk product is a market requirement (retail berries, HORECA shrimp).
