Project overview
A port operator in East Africa needed to more than double reefer capacity to support horticulture, meat and seafood exports. ColdMatch Group coordinated electrical infrastructure, plug racks, monitoring platform and civil coordination through a multi-vendor tender.
Challenge
- Existing 500 plugs were consistently over-subscribed, causing container roll-overs and quality claims.
- Grid supply was unreliable; single-source failure would compromise entire reefer stack.
- Cargo owners and shipping lines required per-container temperature history for insurance.
Solution
- Dedicated 15 MVA substation with dual feeders and rotating generator backup.
- Modular plug racks pre-fabricated off-site to shorten on-terminal works.
- Cloud reefer monitoring platform with per-container temperature history and alerting.
Result
- Terminal reefer capacity increased from 500 to 1,200 plugs with zero disruption to operations.
- Roll-over rate on reefer bookings dropped from 12% to under 1%.
- Cargo claims for temperature excursions reduced by 74% in year 1.
