Cold storage & refrigeration RFQ — Malawi
Malawi projects are decided by two numbers: landed cost on imported equipment and backup power. Send what you have and ColdMatch structures the brief around both before any supplier is approached.
Reference project figures — Malawi
Modelled with the same audited engineering assumptions as the ColdMatch cold storage calculator: design climate for Malawi and an indicative industrial tariff of USD 0.10/kWh. Refrigeration duty is thermal kW, energy is annual kWh at a 0.55 load factor, and CAPEX is the installed volume-based cost (envelope, plant, evaporators, installation, controls and electrical work) — it is not scaled from the duty figure.
| Reference project | Refrigeration duty | Annual energy | Energy cost / yr | Installed CAPEX | USD / m³ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chilled room 400 m³ (+2 to +8 °C) | 8.5 kW | 12 MWh | USD 1,247 | USD 165,200 | USD 413 |
| Frozen store 1,500 m³ (−18 to −25 °C) | 67.3 kW | 173 MWh | USD 17,274 | USD 619,500 | USD 413 |
| Blast freezer 600 m³ (−35 to −40 °C) | 67.3 kW | 142 MWh | USD 14,237 | USD 467,280 | USD 779 |
Indicative planning bands only — not an engineering design, tariff quotation or supplier offer. Your own capacity, product, site and power situation move these numbers; send the RFQ below and a specialist works them through by hand.

Short form — the details you already have are enough. A specialist reviews every brief by hand and replies by email. Nothing is shared with manufacturers before that review.
What changes the price in Malawi
- Landlocked routing — state whether equipment comes via Nacala, Beira or Durban, because it moves both cost and lead time.
- ESCOM load shedding: an N+1 genset or a PV + battery hybrid belongs in the specification from day one.
- Lake Malawi fisheries usually need flake or block ice at the landing site before any freezing capacity is justified.
- Dairy and horticulture aggregation points often need milk chilling or pre-cooling rather than a full cold store.

Malawi cold chain RFQ — questions buyers ask
What does a cold store cost in Malawi?
A 300–800 m³ chilled room typically lands at USD 200–340 per m³ installed and a frozen room at USD 280–470 per m³, before civil works. Freight, clearing and inland trucking normally add 15–25% on the equipment value.
Are Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu all covered?
Yes — cold storage, blast freezing, ice plants and refrigerated distribution across Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Zomba, including airfreight-linked cold rooms at Kamuzu International Airport.
What happens after I send the RFQ for a Malawi project?
A ColdMatch specialist reads the brief by hand, checks the design basis — capacity, temperature bands, site location, power situation, timeline and budget — and comes back by email with the open questions. Only after that review do we research suppliers. Nothing is sent to a manufacturer automatically and ColdMatch is not an open marketplace.
Can ColdMatch finance a cold storage project in Malawi?
No. ColdMatch Group does not lend and does not give financial advice. Qualified projects can be introduced to independent financing partners — equipment leasing, ECA-backed supplier credit on imported refrigeration and DFI or blended structures. Every approval decision rests with the lender.
What project size does ColdMatch work on?
Commercial and industrial projects from roughly USD 250,000 upwards: cold storage warehouses, blast freezers and IQF tunnels, ammonia and CO₂ plants, ice plants, GDP pharma stores and turnkey EPC builds. Smaller enquiries are still answered, but supplier research is prioritised above that threshold.
