Cold storage & refrigeration RFQ — Kenya
Kenyan projects are decided by export temperature discipline and electricity cost. Send the product, throughput and site, and ColdMatch structures the technical brief before any supplier is approached.
Reference project figures — Kenya
Modelled with the same audited engineering assumptions as the ColdMatch cold storage calculator: design climate for Kenya and an indicative industrial tariff of USD 0.17/kWh. Refrigeration duty is thermal kW, energy is annual kWh at a 0.55 load factor, and CAPEX is the installed volume-based cost (envelope, plant, evaporators, installation, controls and electrical work) — it is not scaled from the duty figure.
| Reference project | Refrigeration duty | Annual energy | Energy cost / yr | Installed CAPEX | USD / m³ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chilled room 400 m³ (+2 to +8 °C) | 9 kW | 13 MWh | USD 2,244 | USD 175,000 | USD 438 |
| Frozen store 1,500 m³ (−18 to −25 °C) | 71.3 kW | 183 MWh | USD 31,111 | USD 656,250 | USD 438 |
| Blast freezer 600 m³ (−35 to −40 °C) | 71.3 kW | 151 MWh | USD 25,641 | USD 495,000 | USD 825 |
Indicative planning bands only — not an engineering design, tariff quotation or supplier offer. Your own capacity, product, site and power situation move these numbers; send the RFQ below and a specialist works them through by hand.

Short form — the details you already have are enough. A specialist reviews every brief by hand and replies by email. Nothing is shared with manufacturers before that review.
What changes the price in Kenya
- Horticulture out of Naivasha and Nairobi needs forced-air pre-cooling before storage — cooling rate, not just volume, sets the plant size.
- JKIA airfreight build-up rooms and Mombasa reefer handling are different specifications; state the export route.
- KPLC tariffs and outage windows justify pricing PV-hybrid or N+1 standby power as a scoped line, plus high-efficiency compressors.
- Fisheries at Mombasa and Lake Victoria usually start with flake ice and chill capacity before blast freezing is justified.
- GDP pharma storage in Nairobi needs validated 2–8 °C rooms, mapping and continuous monitoring in the base scope.

Kenya cold chain RFQ — questions buyers ask
What does a cold room cost in Kenya?
As a planning range, a 200–1,000 m³ chilled room is typically USD 170–300 per m³ installed and a frozen room USD 250–420 per m³, before civil works, racking and standby power. Import freight and clearing via Mombasa usually add 10–20% on equipment value.
Which cities and sectors are covered?
Nairobi and Athi River for distribution, retail and pharma storage, Naivasha and Nanyuki for horticulture pre-cooling, Mombasa for reefer handling and fisheries, Eldoret and Nakuru for dairy, meat and agri-processing.
What happens after I send the RFQ for a Kenya project?
A ColdMatch specialist reads the brief by hand, checks the design basis — capacity, temperature bands, site location, power situation, timeline and budget — and comes back by email with the open questions. Only after that review do we research suppliers. Nothing is sent to a manufacturer automatically and ColdMatch is not an open marketplace.
Can ColdMatch finance a cold storage project in Kenya?
No. ColdMatch Group does not lend and does not give financial advice. Qualified projects can be introduced to independent financing partners — equipment leasing, ECA-backed supplier credit on imported refrigeration and DFI or blended structures. Every approval decision rests with the lender.
What project size does ColdMatch work on?
Commercial and industrial projects from roughly USD 250,000 upwards: cold storage warehouses, blast freezers and IQF tunnels, ammonia and CO₂ plants, ice plants, GDP pharma stores and turnkey EPC builds. Smaller enquiries are still answered, but supplier research is prioritised above that threshold.
