Vendor & Supplier Credit for Cold-Chain Equipment

Structured payment terms, deferred payment, supplier credit and buyer's credit programmes for refrigeration equipment procurement.

Executive summary

Vendor credit covers the gap between order and revenue on capital equipment. It ranges from simple 30/60/90 payment terms to structured multi-year buyer's credit arranged through the supplier's home-country ECA or bank. Never treat it as a substitute for benchmarking — the financing cost is almost always embedded in the equipment price.

Eligibility & what lenders assess

Suppliers extend credit against buyer creditworthiness, order size, home-market policies and — for longer tenors — insurance or ECA cover. Deferred payment beyond 12 months usually requires bank confirmation or an ECA-backed structure.

Who this is for

Buyers importing packaged refrigeration systems, freezer plants, controls and instrumentation, EPC-delivered cold storage and refrigerated fleets from established international suppliers.

Common structures

Open account with net terms; letter of credit with deferred payment; documentary collections; supplier credit (loan from supplier); ECA-backed buyer's credit (loan from supplier's bank, insured by supplier's ECA). Each shifts risk differently between buyer, supplier and lender.

How pricing hides

Extended payment terms are rarely free. Discount for cash vs 12/24/36-month payment often reveals the embedded finance cost. Always request both prices to benchmark against a straight loan or lease.

Retention and warranties

Cold-chain equipment contracts typically retain 5–10% until performance testing (FAT/SAT) and site acceptance. Coordinate retention with the financing structure — a lender may require the retention to sit in escrow.

Common buyer mistakes

  • Accepting supplier credit without asking for the cash-discount price.
  • Signing an FX-exposed deferred payment with no hedge.
  • Losing lender price benchmarking by sole-sourcing.
  • Missing FAT/SAT / retention language that ties to disbursement.

Buyer financing-readiness checklist

  • Request cash price vs deferred-payment price for every quote.
  • Confirm FX and hedging plan for foreign-currency contracts.
  • Align retention, LC, and warranty windows with financing milestones.
  • Independent inspection at FAT and SAT.
  • Compare embedded finance cost vs bank / lease alternative.

Frequently asked

Is vendor credit cheaper than a bank?

Sometimes on paper. Almost never after the embedded finance margin is priced in. Benchmark against a straight bank or lease quote before deciding.

Can vendor credit combine with ECA cover?

Yes. Supplier credit backed by the exporter's home-country ECA is a common structure for USD 5M+ equipment packages.
